Description
Abarth 500 / 595 Solid Mass Flywheel — DMF Replacement
A solid mass flywheel conversion for the Abarth 500 and 595, replacing the standard dual mass flywheel (DMF). The solid mass flywheel eliminates the complex spring-damper mechanism of the OEM dual mass flywheel, replacing it with a single solid steel unit that is significantly more durable, more responsive, and better suited to performance and motorsport use. A popular and well-proven upgrade for Abarth 500 and 595 builds used on track, in competition, or for spirited fast road driving.
Key Specifications
- Fitment: Abarth 500 and 595 1.4 T-Jet
- Application: Solid mass flywheel — replaces OEM dual mass flywheel (DMF)
- Material: Chromoly Forged billet steel
- Clutch Compatibility: Compatible with OEM clutch kit
Dual Mass vs Solid Mass Flywheel — What’s the Difference?
The standard Abarth 500 and 595 is fitted from the factory with a dual mass flywheel (DMF). The DMF uses an internal spring-damper system to absorb drivetrain vibration and smooth out the power delivery from the engine — improving refinement and reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) in everyday driving. However, the DMF has significant drawbacks for performance use:
- Wear and failure: The internal spring-damper mechanism is a wear item. DMFs are expensive to replace and can fail suddenly, particularly under the higher loads of performance driving or track use.
- Power loss: The spring-damper mechanism absorbs some rotational energy, reducing the amount of power reaching the gearbox.
- Slower throttle response: The additional rotating mass and compliance of the DMF slows throttle response compared to a solid flywheel.
- Cost: OEM DMF replacement is significantly more expensive than a solid mass flywheel conversion.
A solid mass flywheel eliminates all of these issues. With no internal mechanism to wear out, the SMF is far more durable under performance use. The reduced rotating mass improves throttle response and engine revving characteristics, and more power reaches the gearbox without the energy absorption of the DMF spring-damper system.
Trade-Offs to Consider
The solid mass flywheel conversion does involve some trade-offs compared to the OEM DMF that buyers should be aware of:
- Increased NVH: Without the DMF’s vibration damping, more drivetrain vibration and noise will be transmitted into the cabin — particularly at low RPM and on the overrun. This is normal and expected, and is an accepted trade-off for the performance gains.
- Idle quality: Some additional vibration at idle is normal with a solid flywheel, particularly on a 4-cylinder engine.
Clutch Compatibility
This solid mass flywheel is compatible with the standard OEM clutch kit for the Abarth 500 and 595 — no uprated or specialist clutch is required. This makes the SMF conversion a straightforward, cost-effective upgrade: fit the solid flywheel with your existing or replacement OEM clutch and benefit immediately from improved throttle response and drivetrain durability without additional clutch costs.
